NDIS Changes coming in October 2024

Updated: Nov 14, 2024

A block of notes written "time for change NDIS" and "October 2024" on the right side of the notes.

With the recent approval of legislative changes by the Australian Parliament, significant updates to the NDIS will take effect starting October 3rd, 2024. Here’s what you and your clients need to know:

What Changes Will Take Effect?

New Definition of NDIS Supports

A more comprehensive definition of what qualifies as NDIS support will be introduced. This change will clarify what clients can use their funding for and establish clearer rules about what expenses are not covered.

Budget and Funding Periods

Your clients’ plans will now show total amounts for all their supports. Current plans will continue to display line items based on the NDIS price guide, but new plans will be presented as budgets, showing the total allocation and how long it needs to last. Monitoring these budgets and service agreements closely will be essential to ensure proper usage of funds.

( You may have already seen these on new PACE plans, it is now time for it to come into effect.)

12-Month Plans

You may have already noticed that some clients are receiving 1-year plans. This may seem contradictory to previous years, where the NDIS promoted up to 3-year plans.

But this is part of the NDIS’s adjustments, and while longer plans are expected to be introduced in the future, most participants will receive yearly plans until these updates are finalised.

Registration Changes for NDIS Providers

The much-anticipated new registration system is starting to take shape. Recommendations include registration requirements for platform providers (Mable and Hireup), through participants  Support Coordinators, and Supported Independent Living (SIL) services. The government is actively collaborating with the disability community to ensure a smooth rollout of this system.

With it comes uncertainty among unregistered Support Coordinators about how and when these changes will be implemented. Lots of questions and feeling anxious about the future. While registered businesses are already trying to attract contracted workers from the unregistered, there are still no official details from the government regarding costs or the exact process.

It’s important not to rush into decisions based on offers from businesses seeking to capitalise on the transition.

Due to all the NDIS changes coming in October 2024 and the months to follow, we are committed to keeping you informed and updated as more information becomes available.

Stay tuned for further updates!

We wish you well, as always
